Clear filters RA/DEC Coordinate system Right ascension and declination form an object’s address on the celestial sphere.
+ RA 0–24 h · DEC −90°…+90°Right ascension is measured eastward in hours, while declination is measured north or south of the celestial equator. Astro Arena uses epoch J2000.0.
MAG Magnitude A smaller number means a brighter object.
+ Δm = −2.5 log₁₀(F₂/F₁)The scale is logarithmic: five magnitudes represent a hundredfold difference in received flux. Negative magnitudes are very bright.
α β γ Bayer designations A Greek letter and the Latin genitive identify a star.
+ α CMa · β Ori · γ CasLetters often roughly follow brightness, but not always. The designation is a stable way to connect a star with its constellation.
θ Angular separation The shortest arc between two directions on the celestial sphere.
+ cos θ = sin δ₁ sin δ₂ + cos δ₁ cos δ₂ cos ΔαFor a quick estimate, use a fist at arm’s length as about 10°, three middle fingers as 5°, and a little finger as 1°.
FOV Field of view The angular width seen by a chart, binoculars or telescope.
+ TFOV ≈ AFOV / povečavaA wide field helps orientation; a narrow field confirms detail. During star hopping, move through overlapping fields.
TYPE Object types Stars, clusters, nebulae and galaxies have different visual signatures.
+ zvezda · kopica · meglica · galaksijaClusters resolve into stars, nebulae are diffuse, and galaxies often show a brighter core. Appearance depends strongly on sky darkness and magnification.
01 Recognise a constellation Begin with the shape, then check proportions between bright stars, and only then recall the name.
Find the most distinctive arc or polygon. Compare lengths and angles, not only rotation. Confirm with one neighbouring constellation. Open related practice → 02 Find a star Connect a bright star with the pattern around it, not only its colour or brightness.
Choose a bright anchor. Follow an arc, pair or constellation edge. Check colour and nearby stars. Open related practice → 03 Star hopping Travel from a bright star to a faint target in short, repeatable steps.
Choose a route with clear intermediate patterns. Match the chart and optics field of view. Confirm each step before continuing. Open related practice → 04 Read RA and declination Treat the coordinates as a grid first, then as a position on the sky.
Convert RA from degrees to hours when needed. Keep the declination north/south sign. Confirm epoch J2000.0. Open related practice → 05 Measure an angle in the sky Estimate first, then use a reference angle and correct the error.
Classify the gap as small, medium or wide. Compare with 1°, 5° or 10° at arm’s length. Record the direction of your error. Open related practice → 06 Messier Marathon Plan the night around object setting times, conditions and short routes between fields.
Begin with the objects that set first. Prepare charts and order in advance. Preserve night vision and record confirmations. Open related practice →
